Parks Canada sought to renew its visitor program by providing a more complete experience that turns a spotlight on the Agency’s collaborative work with Indigenous communities to convey a more inclusive history. Merlicht was chosen to update the site route by introducing new interpretive elements that underscore the diplomatic relationship between the successive colonial powers and Huron-Wendat nation. A number of museographic challenges emerged early on, including the need to ensure the content was in line with the earlier exhibition, the strong identity of the site itself and the abstract nature of the topic.

The exhibition design navigates the site-related obstacles. For instance, the devices were safely anchored and seamlessly integrated into the site; no flammable materials were used and the high level of humidity and dusty environment created by the floor covering were all considered. Designed by Merlicht, the devices’ clean lines and colours reflect the esthetics of the earlier exhibition. The short texts are compelling, and the iconography was meticulously selected. The materials meld with the space and highlight it.

Merlicht collaborated with the Parks Canada team, the Huron-Wendat Museum, Wendake Tourism and the Nionwenstio Office.
